First, let me kick-start this "about me" with a salute to all doctors who speak to their patients in laymen terms. Good doctors should always remember medical speak is lost on the vast majority of patients. For you doctors cognizant of this, I thank you!

My story isn’t anything earth shattering, nor will it change your life. However, what I do hope is that by sharing my story I will encourage other Humans to share theirs.

In 1999 I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Being diagnosed with a disease was a definite set-back for me, considering I had spent the first twenty four years of my life, for the most part, indestructible.  The common cold, a broken arm, a bruised ego were all I had ever encountered physically or emotionally.

The memory of sitting in the doctor’s office reviewing my blood test results is still fresh in my mind today. I was in complete disbelief. I had never felt so alone, so vulnerable, so nervous.

Since becoming a diabetic, my life has changed significantly. At times, I’m the model patient, while at other times, I’m the guy questioning my decisions, wondering when the heck I’ll get my act together. Hey, I’m Human, and as anyone with a disease will tell you, it’s a day to day affair. One thing I have done consistently is become an advocate for my disease. Before my diagnosis I knew more about the JFK conspiracy theories than I did the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but through life experience I’ve become an expert on all things related to diabetes and I’m always eager to enlighten anyone who’s interested in learning.

In 2006 my grandmother Helen, and a close friend, Rusty, were diagnosed with cancer. Both underwent chemo and the life altering experiences that come along with it.

Their journeys through recovery were completely different and though they’ve never met, they share a bond greater than most. They are cancer survivors. They are my heroes, not only for their will, but their willingness; their willingness to share, and their willingness to educate. It is as a result of their inspiring stories that our idea to start this company was resurrected.

So many of us have stories to tell. There are endless tidbits of information, experiences, facts, truths, and myths that need to be talked about; it is vital. Vital for all Humans to share, and to educate, so we can ultimately eliminate fear, and enlighten fellow Humans on the causes affecting all of us.

Knowledge is power, so please support FiveHumans™, as we embark on our mission to raise awareness, and erase ignorance.
